AAUDE and SED - Agreement

Congratulations on completing your doctorate!

Texas A&M University values information gathered from graduate students who have completed their degree at the University. To this end, we respectfully request that you complete two surveys. Information gained from these surveys will be used internally and externally to help us improve our graduate programs.

You are not obligated to answer any questions you are uncomfortable with and are not required to complete either of the surveys. Participation is voluntary and refusal to participate will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which the subject is otherwise entitled and the subject may discontinue participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which the subject is otherwise entitled. The risks associated with this study are minimal, and are not greater than risks ordinarily encountered in daily life. Information used internally or externally will be kept confidential and specifically used as indicated in the Confidentiality and Privacy webpage (SED) and listed below (SED and AAUDE).

The Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) is the definitive source of information on the nation’s new research doctorates. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and five other Federal agencies and conducted by NORC, the SED is critical to understanding in what specialty areas doctorates are produced and their post-graduation employment plans. Results are used by government as well as academic institutions to make decisions about graduate education funding, developing new programs and supporting existing ones.

The ability of the survey to accurately describe doctorate earners depends on obtaining responses from all doctorate degree recipients. Your response affects decisions made for the future generations of doctorate recipients.

The SED now allows the option to complete the survey online. Research doctorate recipients will now be able to register directly via the web and instantaneously receive a PIN and password as well as the URL to the survey.

In addition, Texas A&M University has developed the AAUDE Core Graduate Education Exit Survey from a set of core questions in use at a number of member institutions of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Information gained from this survey will be distributed through the Texas A&M University Data and Research Services to AAU and be combined with data from other contributing AAU institutions to help us improve our graduate programs.

Your voluntary response to this survey will constitute your informed consent to participate in this activity and confirm that you are a TAMU student who has completed a Thesis, Dissertation, or Record of Study. The information provided on the survey questionnaires (SED and AAUDE) remains confidential as allowed by Texas Law and is safeguarded in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974, as amended. The survey data is reported in aggregate form or in a manner that does not identify information about any individual. No identifiers linking you to this study will be included in any sort of report that might be published. Research records will be stored securely. Thank you for taking the time to fill out these questionnaires and best wishes to you as you continue moving forward on your career path. The records of this study will be kept private.

PLEASE NOTE: Texas A&M University requests you submit a certificate from the SED, noting that you have either elected to complete the survey or opt out. This may be obtained by entering thesis@tamu.edu on the e-mail notification screen at the end of the questionnaire. You will also have an opportunity to receive a confirmation email at the end of the survey. The certificate may also be submitted to the Thesis and Dissertation Services (in person in Room 112 Jack K. Williams Administrative Building or via fax or email). Submitting the certificate does NOT imply that any or all of the questions must be completed, merely that the questions were reviewed prior to survey submittal.
