December 2020

There is just something special about the holiday season. Families coming together to celebrate and cook delicious meals makes winter the hap-happiest season of all. Kids running around jingle belling and families sharing old tales and anecdotes makes winter the hap-happiest season of all. Mr. Andy Williams helps in feeling the holiday spirit with his famous It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year song.

It's the most wonderful time of the year
With the kids jingle belling
And everyone telling you be of good cheer
It's the most wonderful time of the year

It's the hap-happiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings
When friends come to call
It's the hap-happiest season of all

Unfortunately, during this pandemic, we are stuck in our homes. Hopefully, sipping some coffee or tea to help us stay warm. Even though this holiday season may look a bit different for many, the time to rest and relax in the company of delicious food will not be interrupted. Even though we may not be physically with our family or friends, technology crosses those barriers and brings us loved ones closer than pandemics ago. This means we should pull out ancient recipes that bring memories from times spent with family and friends.

I plan to put my cooking skills to the test since we will not have the big family potluck party we usually have during this time of the year. I will try to cook my grandma’s tamales, my mother’s posole, and my aunts bunuelos. Although it will not be the same as in previous years, I hope this will be the last holiday season we will experience this. While I do feel sad about not being able to gather as we have in previous years, I am thankful our family is healthy and safe, and it makes me appreciate the times we have had together.

Please share your plans and unique dishes you will cook this holiday season. Maybe this year will be the year we add additional dishes to our dinner table.
