The Aggie Family Has Gained A First Lady teaser image
First Lady Barbara P. Bush has earned many titles. The Silver Fox. The Enforcer. The First Lady of the Greatest Generation. Her family remembers her as “Ganny.” At Texas A&M University, we will always remember Mrs. Bush as a member of the Aggie Family.

While Mrs. Bush is not a former student, she and her husband, President George H.W. Bush, have chosen Texas A&M University as the location for his Presidential Library & Museum. They also established The Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M, a professional school built upon President Bush’s philosophy that public service is a noble calling. At this location, the Bush’s chose their final resting place alongside their daughter, Robin. In one interview, Mrs. Bush referred to the burial site as “the prettiest place” and she was very proud to choose Texas A&M and College Station as her final home. While Mrs. Bush has greatly impacted those at Texas A&M and The Bush School, she also spent her life upholding the core values of our beloved university.

Excellence

Mrs. Bush is the only woman, besides Abigail Adams, to be a wife and a mother to a president of the United States. She is remembered for her tremendous love for others, her encouragement to those in need, and her determination to speak her mind. She embodies excellence through the life she led and the legacy she leaves behind.

Integrity

Our Aggie Code of Honor states: “Aggies do not lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate those that do.” Through her honesty, motherly support, humor and encouragement, Mrs. Bush publicly displayed her integrity. Her classy style, meaningful kindness and loving heart all play into her lifelong example for others.

Leadership

Through The Bush School, Mrs. Bush and her husband have further advanced their legacy of leadership. She strongly advocated for volunteerism throughout her life, and Mrs. Bush made literacy a national priority. Her leadership in our nation, her family and her community represents her dedication to helping others.

Loyalty

While Mrs. Bush has displayed loyalty to her family, her friends, and her country, the greatest illustration of her loyalty is to her husband, President George H.W. Bush. The two met when she was 16 and he was 17. He was her first kiss and they endured 73 years of marriage together. She was loyal to her best friend for a lifetime.

Respect

Mrs. Bush has been recognized since her passing for her respect of others. As a former First Lady, military wife, and dedicated mother, she has earned our respect. We will continue to look to her as an example and remember her for the way she made everyone feel like his or her work was meaningful.

Selfless Service

As a public servant, Mrs. Bush has not only embodied service, but also encouraged others to join her and her husband’s journey to become “points of light.” She served her family and our nation for many years and made countless sacrifices to bring positive change into our society.

President and Mrs. Bush have established quite the legacy at Texas A&M University, fulfilling our Aggie Core Values and bringing their passion for volunteerism to College Station. We are proud that they have chosen to call Aggieland their home. Students at The Bush School are dedicated to fulfill the legacy Mrs. Bush leaves behind as we answer the calling of public service. Our thoughts will forever be with our namesakes: President Bush and his beautiful, strong, and fierce First Lady.

Aggieland - Lessons and Gratitude

I came to Texas A&M as an international student, but I will leave as part of something much greater - the Aggie family. That is something that cannot be fully described in words, but felt in every action, connection, and step I take toward a brighter future.
