Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Mental Health and Wellness Workshops

Each semester, CAPS offers graduate and professional students Wellness Wednesday events focused on mental health. Wellness sessions will alternate between a Brown Bag Lunch and Learn (where participants will watch and discuss a TED talk or YouTube video), and a single session workshop. The single session workshops will focus on one of the following topics: self-compassion, stress management, and overcoming perfectionism. The Wellness Wednesday events will meet via Zoom and students can self-enroll for each event through the CAPS Student Portal.


Spring 2023 Workshops

G.R.A.D. Aggies Workshops - Presented by Counseling & Psychological Services

Date: 2/9
Time: 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Topic: Stress Management with Dr. Duncan and Dr. Wright (Joint PVAMU-TAMU Professional Development Series)
This workshop will enhance students’ understanding of stress and its impact and help them develop immediate and long-term stress management skills. Dr. Esther Wright from Counseling & Psychological Services at Texas A&M University and Dr. Bernadine Duncan from Student Counseling Services at Prairie View A&M University will co-facilitate this session as a part of the Joint PVAMU-TAMU Professional Development Series.

This is a workshop for students who want to understand what it means to be self-compassionate. The goal of the workshop is to enhance their understanding of self-compassion and introduce tools that will help them practice self-compassion.

Students will learn the myths and consequences of perfectionistic thinking. Students will also learn strategies to challenge perfectionistic thinking and move towards a more “growth oriented” process style of thinking.

1st Wednesdays Brown Bag Lunch and Learn

Topic: “1% Better Every Day” 
James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, describes how small changes in daily habits can improve your life. He shares practical strategies that will help you form good habits, break bad ones, and master tiny behaviors that lead to big changes.

Topic: “The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance"
Shawn Achor is the CEO of Aspirant, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers—people who are well above average—to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. He states that our brains work better when we are happy. He reviews three activities we can utilize to train our brains to be happier.

Topic: "The Power of Gratitude"
Robert Emmons, the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, the founding editor-in-chief of The Journal of Positive Psychology and the author of several books. He explains how gratitude can heal, energize, and change our lives.


3rd Wednesdays Single Session Workshops
