Overview

The Biomedical Sciences PhD program is an interdepartmental program administered through each of the five School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences departments. Focusing on cross-disciplinary education, this program provides students with a comprehensive educational experience that integrates didactic curricular learning with immersive research training.

Why a PhD in BIMS?

Graduates of the BIMS PhD program develop a robust foundation in scientific knowledge and research techniques, equipping them to excel in a wide range of biomedical research careers. Through rigorous coursework, advanced laboratory training, and hands-on research experience, students cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills essential for success in both academic and industry settings. Students are prepared to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of biomedical science, whether in academia, pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries, government agencies, or nonprofit organizations. Graduates are well-positioned to drive innovation in medical research, public health, and translational medicine, making lasting contributions to the betterment of human health and wellbeing.

Why Texas A&M?

The PhD program at the College of Veterinary Medicine offers a diverse range of didactic courses and research opportunities throughout a student's academic journey. All admitted PhD students are guaranteed a stipend of $26,000 annually, in addition to coverage for tuition and fees. Beyond financial support and the core curriculum, an essential component of the program is an intensive research experience, guided by the mentorship of a faculty advisor. The faculty within the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) conduct research across a broad spectrum of topics, from basic biomedical sciences to veterinary clinical applications, and translational studies with relevance to both human and environmental health. This diversity in research enables students to engage in a wide variety of projects, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and providing opportunities for significant contributions to multiple areas of science.

Duration and Curriculum

Students are required to complete a minimum of four years, including 96 credit hours (or 64 with an approved master's degree). Some researchers will expand the length of their prorgram to five or six years, depending on the scope of research they are doing and timing.

Most didactic coursework for the program is taught in-person on the College Station campus, with the exception of any students studying at any of the satellite campuses. All research is done in-house.

What Is the Cost of Attendance?

PhD students in this program are fully funded. Tuition and fees are covered and a $26,000 annual stipend is provided.

When Can I Start?

Students are encouraged to begin their search for a mentor who will agree to fund them throughout the program. To do this, they may review the four curricular training tracks that align with the college's research emphasis areas. Applicants are then encouraged to contact faculty listed among the training tracks that closely meet their own interests. Once a mentor is confirmed, students should submit their application for a direct admit.

Domestic students, or intenational students already located in the United States may also be eligible to apply for the Rotation Program, which, if admitted - would allow them to rotate through several labs to best find a permanent mentor.
