Blog 17: First Time Tailgating: A Quintessential Aggie Ritual

For an international student, tailgating can be quite puzzling. Images of flag-laden RVs, trucks, and cars with a great number of fans partying are what come to mind, largely attributable to media portrayal. While in its simplified form it’s just football, BBQ, and alcohol, therein lies a sense of ritual and camaraderie that needs partaking to be felt. Thus, even though I missed my first tailgating last year, I wanted to experience it first-hand in 2022. To my surprise, it was nothing short of the best festivities Aggieland has to offer. From young kids practicing their kicks to seniors enjoying the game and all it entails. And then there was me, your humble
narrator, strolling around for an hour before getting to my school tent. Soaking in the atmosphere, the sights, lights, and smells, it was perhaps a sort of prelude to the incoming winter.

From what I was told by seasoned tailgaters at the School of Public Health, 2022 saw one of the largest crowds since the COVID-19 outbreak. It was heartening to hear it since it gave a sense of normality in the world we live in today. For a doctoral student, the joy of free food and beer cannot be described in words. I’ll let your imagination do that. Apart from food and festivities, tailgating is a wonderful opportunity to network with faculties, and getting to see them in a new light is a worthy experience. It can be great for more reserved or introverted students as it allows a more relaxed atmosphere for interaction. My interaction during the tailgate revolved around thanksgiving plans, winter break, and discussing academic and personal lives. It was wonderful to realize that the cheerful atmosphere energized them, and they were actively participating in
the discussion.

While the Texas A&M Aggies can’t catch a breath this season, the devoted tailgaters gave them umpteen support with a show of force for the home games. It is a wonderful sight to see such passionate fans and followers who attend such familial and jovial events. It is a testament to aggies and their dedication that even during the tailgate, I could see the core values of not just excellence and loyalty, but also integrity, leadership, respect, and selfless service on full display. It is truly a privilege and honor to be part of this revered institution.
