A 2019 Summer Reading List for Graduate Students
The summertime always seems to be when I start reading for pleasure again. It’s always nice to take a break from the dry and technical academic reading that often takes up most of our regular semesters. No matter the topic, be it fiction or self-help, reading something that’s outside of your own field of study, especially without a deadline, can be a great form of self-care. I’ve found some books can provide great advice about life in graduate or professional school. Here are a few titles I would recommend for any graduate or professional student looking for some meaningful reads this summer.

Why enrolling in different Student Organizations is a boon!
Howdy and Namaste!
This post is a result of my recent 22 hours long and uneventful plane journey from India to Houston. I was retrospecting about the first year that I had just completed in grad school. I thought I have had a pretty eventful year studded with some edifying experiences. After this session of intense contemplation, I realized I learnt to find joy in small weekly events hosted by ChEGSA, IGSA, ERS and Time4Chai. This weekly break from the perils of grad school was where I and my friends had found our dose of dopamine. Some of the experiences that I am sharing can be specific to the Chemical Engineering Department. However, I am pretty sure these can be extrapolated to other departments as well.

The Sport Management Society Saved My Life
October 2018 was the worst month of my life. I look back and I still remember the collision of my personal life, work life, and academic life spreading my broken spirit so thin that it seemed that I was in an impossible situation with no way out. The quicksand, the whitewater rapids, the resistant force that is depression and anxiety began to make it hard to find a will to keep fighting. No matter how exhausted I was, I could not go to sleep. Regardless of how hungry I was, there were so many days I could not eat. The imposter syndrome derived from being a first-generation college student from a low-income, single-mother home that had to fight through the Blinn TEAM Program just to feel like I belonged. It seemed like there was no escape.

Get on Board with I-Week 2018
Every spring, International Student Association, together with many other nation clubs and international groups here at Texas A&M, host the I-Week on campus (I stands for International, of course). This year, events will happen during the first week of April. It will be a great opportunity to get to know people from different countries and cultural background, and to appreciate the diversity of our Aggies student body! Make sure to mark your calendar to attend some of these amazing events.
