Hello friends –

This week is JAM packed with lots of music, food, and the arts. There is even a group grape harvest at a local winery! I’ve never even heard of such a thing, but it sounds like a fun thing to do with friends.

I truly wish I could join you around town, but I am in the process of moving, which is significantly less entertaining and also not as free. What a shame. There are so many incredible events this weekend, so I hope you’ll shut off Netflix and get out there! I may sneak out to listen to the The Lonely Wheel on Friday night (give them a listen below, they are amazing) or attend the theatre preview on Sunday.

Friday, July 21
  • South Brazos County Farmers' Friday Market at 700 Scott and White Dr., 12:00 – 5:30 pm This farmer’s market offers a variety of fresh produce and homemade goods, including pet treats, breads, and fresh salsa.

  • Summer Nights Concert Series: Austin English Band at Lake Walk Town Center, 6:30 – 9:30 pm Free
    The Austin English will go on stage around 8:00 pm, but you and your lawn chair can arrive as soon as 6:30 to purchase food and drinks from local food trucks.

  • Friday Night Music with The Lonely Wheel at Village Café and Art979 Gallery, 8:00 – 10:00 pm I feel like I should always call out when a local band IS NOT country, and these guys call themselves “an eclectic blend of Folk, Blues, Soul, and more.” Listen to the video below to get a glimpse of their intriguing sound. They have a cello!

Saturday, July 22
  • Community Harvest 2017 by Peach Creek Vineyards at 2029 Peach Creek Rd. College Station, 7:00 – 11:59 am I’ve never heard of an event quite like this, but you and your friends can come help harvest some grapes and learn more about the wine industry. Snacks and cold water and coffee will be provided, and harvesting should wrap up around 9:30. Afterwards, there will be a party with free entertainment and food for the pickers! This event sounds incredibly fun and potentially like a workout? Not sure, have never harvested grapes before.

  • Cooking with HEB at Clara B. Mounce Public Library, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Free
    Registered dietician Rita Zapien will be onsite sharing tips and recipes with the audience, and participants will be able to try some of the recipes, as well as ask questions.

  • Women's Only Workout at BodyLab Crossfit (2300 S College Ave, Bryan), 10:00 – 11:30 am
    Free
    This event is open to the public and people of all skill levels. Coaches will be there to guide you in your workout.

  • The Art of Coffee: Brewing the Perfect Cup at What’s the Buzz Coffee Co. (3201 University Drive East Suite 120), 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Tickets: $20.00, which includes entry to the class, a fresh brewed coffee, a bag of coffee to take home, and brew guides. Call 979-695-0099 to reserve your spot!

  • Country Swing Night at Brazos Ballroom Dance (501 Graham Rd, CS), 7:00 – 11:00 pm
    Tickets:     $10, which includes a 30-minute lesson and open dancing, as well as light refreshments.

  • Odd Folks Music Video Party w/ Pizza Planet and friends! at Revolution Café and Bar, 7:00 pm – 2:00 am
    $5     cover charge, Odd Folks will be recording their music video starting around 11:00 pm, and they have requested that the audience sing along to their song “Friends”. Come out to be a part of this recording! Pizza Planet, Wartime Afternoon, and The Fox in the Ground will all be playing throughout the evening as well.

The Texas State Fair

As a non-Texan, I have a list of places I want to visit and things I wish to do in Texas while here for graduate school. One of these things included the renowned Texas State Fair. Established in 1886, the Fair has been an iconic event synonymous with Texas. The saying “Everything is bigger in Texas” rings true on the fair grounds. Located on the outskirts of Dallas, the state fair boasts the largest and longest running fair in the entire country. With over 277 acres of rides, games, and food there is something for everyone to enjoy. During the 24-day duration of the fair over 2 million people from all 50 states and 183 countries enjoyed the festivities. So, after buying my tickets and finishing my assignments, early Saturday morning I made my pilgrimage up to the Fair.

Spring Break in Kyoto

Last week my fellow TAMU students took Spring Break back in College Station. So I decided to join them, taking advantage of the pause in classes to visit Japan’s ancient capital of Kyoto.

Japan is in the midst of a tourism boom, hosting an influx of visitors emanating from a rising middle class in China and Southeast Asia. The country is becoming well known throughout the world for ease of travel, safety, and scenic beauty, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will only add to this notoriety. By some estimates Japan may surpass the United States as the world’s top destination for tourists. The ongoing tourism boom is part of the reason for my research.

The crowds in Kyoto certainly spoke to this boom. The cherry blossoms aren’t blooming and the fall colors have long passed, but the visitors were out in full force regardless. Below are some pictures.

             As a graduate student at A&M, I’m sure you’ve grown accustomed to some of the things that make our Aggie family a little different. We stand during football games, we say HOWDY, we yell instead of cheer, the highest-ranking member of the Corps of Cadets is our lady Reveille. The list of things that make A&M different/amazing is honestly a long one, but I’d like to take a moment and tell you about my personal favorite of all our Aggie traditions: Muster.

A historic event: Puerto Rico is…

Puerto Rico is everything but well. Imagine siting at the balcony of your apartment while you watch and hear the rain fall; but this is not your average rainfall. This is a torrential; 150mph wind is blowing the rain parallel to the street. It almost seems like the rain is going to fall up as much as it falls down. This is exactly how every American citizen in Puerto Rico felt on Tuesday the 19th and Wednesday the 20th of September. These were the days that Hurricane Maria, a historical hurricane category 4, made landfall in Puerto Rico completely changing the landscape: the strongest hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico since 1932 (two years before my grandfather was born).

Texas A&M 2024 Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Finals: Graduate Students Compete in Annual Research Presentation Competition

Eight doctoral students and three master’s students had top scores at the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) preliminary competition on October 24 and 25 and will move on to compete in the finals on November 12. At stake is $4,000 in prize money in master’s and doctoral divisions and, for the overall winner, the opportunity to represent Texas A&M at the Southeast Regional 3MT competition in March 2025.

Miniature Dreams, Miniature Deaths: Life on the Academic Job Market

I am currently on the academic job market, slowly filling out applications for jobs all across the country. Every single time that I apply to a job, I fall in love with the school and the place before I hit submit. My mind wanders and I begin to daydream about what my life would look like in these places, and I have hope that my application will stand out and help make my daydream a reality. That is why, every single time that I do not get an email back my heart breaks just a little.
