January 2017

I am talking about the nearly 3-year long $54 million dollar expansion and renovation of the Recreation Center, which had its grand unveiling Tuesday January 17!
My very first blog was about the recreation center, which partly discussed my bitter excitement for the unveiling of the improved gym. You see, partly why I am so excited for this revamp, is because ever since I attended Texas A&M, nearly three years ago, the rec center has been under construction. The weight lifting equipment was placed on top of the basketball court and it was common to wait for the bench press or squat.
So you can imagine my excitement as I rushed over to the rec center at 6PM on the day of its grand opening. Apparently I was not the only person excited, as I was met with College Station traffic and a nearly 30 minute drive time from East Campus – yikes.
Once I parked, I entered in the gym in the new South entrance – by BlueBell Park. I then navigated myself through several hallways which emptied into basketball courts. Our rec center is great if you love basketball, handball, racquetball, badminton, and swimming. There is so much space for these activities. And, fortunately, it is mostly utilized.
Unfortunately, despite the massive expansion, and increase in weight lifting equipment, the facilities are still inadequate for the growth of our student population. I waited upwards of 30 minutes for an open bench or rack to do core exercises, but alas, they were all taken. Hopefully it’ll die down, until then, I am reserving my workouts for off-hours. Despite my disappointment, the services and equipment provided by the recreation center are definitely getting utilized – the new features include:
- New basketball | badminton | volleyball | soccer courts
- Indoor lap pool
- Cardio + weight lifting room with turf
- Activity rooms
