Participation teaser image
I spent my first year indoors thinking it was best for my children, but I realize that they disliked my school lifestyle because I did not involve them. This year we attend events together, it gets frustrating trying to make them stay in a place but overall, they are happier to experience what takes much of my time.

When you get that feeling of being in a big wide ocean, without land in sight. Little groups provide a familiar feel like a piece of wood to hang onto or a ship out of nowhere to rescue you from your questions. The benefits include acquiring knowledge and having a bigger network. Graduate school is more than classroom and research.

It is a chance to know more people/like minds and work with them to provide solutions. We have just concluded a workshop with the American Association of University Women where the topic focused on negotiating a paycheck. Graduate school is a time to spend much time with yourself and research. It is also a time to put yourself into context. How do I see the world and where do I fit in?
Participation in organized activities will not be a distraction if well-spaced, timely and planned. What are the areas of interest that if you knew more you would have more ideas on how to solve problems.

Graduate school feels like an escape from the “real world” sometimes and at other times it feels like being in space and looking at the “real world”. I found peace by relating school and world as friends who help each other stay out of trouble. Graduate school helps you tap into the basic need of doing more for the world. Activities are like more practice after the class game. We meet and apply soft and hard skills to life problems.

The second mentionable activity was the Diversity Hackathon ‘19. It was organized by Dr. Cecilia Guisti and her wonderful team in the Diversity Council. We were grouped into teams and my team “Appsolutely the Best”, produced an app for the libraries called SwipeSmart. See more here

Moving Away: What I Will Miss About College Station, Texas

College Station is the biggest small town in America, and while it has given me a run for my money with its horrible traffic, constant construction, and terrible weather infrastructure… It also holds the key to my heart.
