March 2021

“It’s only already Wednesday,” I said to myself. It makes no sense how it can “only” be halfway through the week yet simultaneously “already” halfway through the week, but there you have it. That’s how it feels, isn't it? Frankly, in the scheme of things, I would rather be between a rock and hard place rather than a Tuesday and a Thursday.

It’s only already Wednesday.

It's only Wednesday and I still have two-plus full workdays until the weekend.

It's already Wednesday, and I have a deadline this week that I only have another day and a half to get done.

Is the outlook positive on one and negative on the other? I would argue no. It's all in the context.

It’s already Wednesday, and I have my party this weekend! Sounds positive.
It’s already Wednesday, and I have not bought anything for my party this weekend! Sounds negative.

It’s only Wednesday, and the party isn’t until this weekend! Sounds negative.
It’s only Wednesday, and I already have everything set up for the party this weekend! Sounds positive.

The funniest thing about all of this is that you could, in an empirical sense, be in the exact same situation and say each of these things. Maybe you are in a good mood and have met half of your deadlines for the week: “It’s only Wednesday! Hooray!” Maybe you are in a bad mood and have met half of your deadlines for the week: “It’s already Wednesday! Oh no!”

It’s up to you, really, how you portray yourself to others and how you talk to yourself in your head. Are you on top of it, thriving, and ready to go? Or are you a self-described “hot mess” who is definitely “not vibing?” Who knows.

But the next time you get to a Wednesday, I beg you, whether you are a quantitative or qualitative scholar in the humanities or the hard sciences, give up your home discipline for a day and default to just the facts. These are as follows:
  1. Today is Wednesday.
  2. You are alive today.
  3. You probably did something this week.
  4. You also probably didn’t do something this week.
That’s it. Rest in the knowledge that it’s a Wednesday and you woke up this morning. After all, that is all that can be confirmed by the universe.
