University Mandated Teaching Assistant Institute Waivers and Exemptions

Departments wishing to offer training through their department-level TA training programs can request a Teaching Assistant Institute Departmental Waiver for the university-mandated Teaching Assistant Institute by submitting the following information to the Center for Teaching Excellence:
• A syllabus outlining the departmental training program for new TAs
• Copies of training materials for their new TAs.
The waiver only applies to the TAI mandate. Depending on the thoroughness of the departments curriculum, some departments are exempt from all components of the TAI, whereas others are exempt from all components except the Online Preparation Training (outlining FERPA and other TAMU policies) and Title IX Training during the TAI. (Exempt departments are responsible to show the Title IX video created by Department of Civil Rights & Equity Investigations the Department of Civil Rights & Equity Investigations or secure a university approved facilitator for a formal presentation. Departments can check their exemption status by viewing the “Waived Component” column on the TAI Waivers page of the Center for Teaching Excellence website. In holding a waiver, departments are still required to post/log their TAs in the TATEP System. They are also still required to engage in all other components of TATEP such as annual report submission to GPS, and presumably TA assessment and evaluation.
