The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Communication is research-intensive and allows students to specialize in one or more of the following areas:

  • Communication, Politics, and Policy
  • Health Communication
  • Organizational Communication
  • Media, Culture, and Identity
  • Rhetoric and Public Affairs


Program requirements aim to prepare students who plan careers in academia or other research-oriented professions.

To earn a PhD in the Department of Communication, students must devise an individualized program of study in consultation with their adviser and demonstrate competency in a specialized area of study, as well as gain a comprehensive background in communication studies.
