LaTeX templates and instructions for theses, dissertations, and records of study
At this time, students may continue using the Thesis and Dissertation Services’ legacy LaTeX template. However, please note that our office does not provide walkthroughs or support materials for LaTeX because creating accessible documents in LaTeX requires advanced configuration and additional effort compared to other formats.
Students who choose to use LaTeX are responsible for ensuring their manuscripts meet accessibility standards. Due to limited staffing and resources, our office cannot provide troubleshooting assistance for LaTeX or support related to accessibility compliance.
Important Considerations for LaTeX Users
LaTeX is a powerful typesetting system, but it does not natively produce accessible PDF documents that meet WCAG or PDF/UA standards, particularly when mathematical content is included. While accessibility can be improved using additional LaTeX packages and manual remediation, there is currently no straightforward solution for generating fully accessible PDFs directly from LaTeX. Users must be aware of accessibility requirements and plan for extra time and resources to ensure compliance, especially for documents with graphics and math.
At present, there is no single package that LaTeX authors can use to automatically produce accessible, standards-compliant PDFs. Overleaf provides guidance on improving accessibility in LaTeX-generated PDFs and highlights that creating fully accessible documents requires additional packages and configuration.
